In 2007, President Alan García wanted to increase the Peruvian Gross National Product (GNP) and Gross National Income (GNI) by calling to American entrepreneurs to invest in the country’s finite natural resources, meaning the Amazonia forest. It involves describing how the nature of an economy (agricultural, industrial, or service-based) changes, but another way is to measure the variability of human well-being (education, health, gender equality) in space. As discussed in class, development is a process of change in the composition of an economy of a particular region and the well-being of its inhabitants, relative to other areas. This documentary goes into great detail the development of Amazon. This documentary is very relevant to our class. Chaos ensued and more than 100 native civilians and 14 policemen were killed. The strike lasted nearly fifty days but on June 5 th, 2009, García ordered Peruvian Police and military forces to stop Amazonian Indigenous protesters from protesting in the Bagua region. No agreement could be made and thus the strike began. Pizango met with many lawmakers to peacefully come to an agreement between Garcia’s party and the indigenous people. He felt the laws were unconstitutional because the Peruvian government needs permission to enter indigenous lands. Garcia signed special decrees that allowed foreign corporations to enter indigenous lands for oil drilling, mining, and logging.Īlberto Pizango, President of Interethnic Association for the Development of the Peruvian Rainforest and member of the Shawi tribe, organized the protest movement against the exploitation of the Amazon rainforest. Garcia encouraged foreign entrepreneurs to invest in the Amazon. The Amazon has lots of natural resources like oil, lumber, gold, etc. To alleviate the economy, one of Alan Garcia’s main agenda item was development in the Amazon. His later term was dedicated to improving the economy for Peru which had been struggling with inflation and other economic issues. These people have lived in isolated in the Peruvian Amazon for countless generations and they depend on the natural resources that the rainforest provides them.Īlan Garcia, leader of the Peruvian Aprista Party, served as the President of Peru from 1985 to 1990 and again from 2006 to 2011. However, the Peruvian Amazon is home to many indigenous tribes, including the Aguaruna, Cocama-Cocamilla and the Urarina. This region comprises sixty percent of the country, yet only five percent of Peruvians live in the Peruvian Amazon. Peru has the second-largest portion of the Amazon rainforest after the Brazilian Amazon and is one of the most biodiverse places on Earth. The Peruvian Amazon is the area of the Amazon rainforest that is included within the country of Peru. There was a loss of more than 100 native civilians and 14 policemen were killed. This opposition between Garcia and Pizango, led to an over fifty-day strike which turned into mass violence. After failed attempts at a compromise, the indigenous tribes organized a strike. Alberto Pizango organized people from different indigenous tribes to protest this unconstitutional taking of land. He called for the extraction of its natural resources while taking the land of the indigenous people. Peruvian president, Alan Garcia, pushed for the development of the Peruvian Amazon. “When Two Worlds Collide” is a documentary chronicling the opposition between the Peruvian government and the indigenous people over the Amazonian rainforest.
